The Greg and Missie Alcorn Digital Learning Lab provides access to technology tools, digital resources and services to all current students, faculty, and staff of Catawba College. These resources and services include:
- the Digital Learning Lab webpage and associated social media feeds
- Technology tools housed in the Alcorn Digital Learning Lab
- Instructional support and one-on-one appointments upon request
Catawba College Student Access
All currently enrolled Catawba College students have access to the Greg and Missie Alcorn Digital Learning Lab webpage, technology tools, digital resources, and instructional support services.
Access to these services is dependent upon the students' good standing with the college, compliance with the library policies of Catawba College, and compliance with Catawba College’s Student Code of Conduct. Any violation of the college’s Code of Conduct will result in a report to the appropriate Program Director and potential loss of access to digital learning lab services.
Students who need special assistance due to a documented disability are encouraged to contact the Digital Learning Lab faculty and staff for access or the Office of Academic Accessibility to assist in arranging access.
Catawba College Faculty and Staff Access
All Catawba College faculty and staff have access to the Alcorn Digital Learning Lab webpage, tools, and resources. Please contact the Digital Learning Lab with any access questions.
Catawba College Alumni Access
The Catawba College Digital Learning lab provides access to Catawba College alumni through scheduled appointments only. Alumni should contact the Digital Learning Lab faculty and/or staff to schedule these appointments.
Public Access
The public only has access to the Alcorn Digital Learning Lab resources by invitation from the Digital Learning Lab faculty or staff. This access must be scheduled in advance by a faculty or staff member assigned to work in the Alcorn Digital Learning Lab.
The DLL is a welcoming environment for all students, faculty, and staff. If you are unsure of how a piece of equipment functions, please ask a DLL Student Assistant.
All equipment is first-come first-served. Equipment can be reserved for larger projects and takes priority. Our equipment reservation form can be accessed here. The equipment we offer is listed below:

The DLL houses three (3) Surface Studios and one (1) iMac that students/faculty/staff are free to use. These computers have access to the Adobe Creative Cloud, editing software, and modeling software. All users are subject to the college’s acceptable use policy.
The DLL has technology that can be checked for short term library-only use or 3-Day checkout. Below is a list of what is offered through the DLL:

The items listed above can only be checked out in the DLL Monday – Friday from 9am – 5pm. The DLL is located on the 2nd floor of the library.
Return Items
Items that need to be returned only can be returned to a DLL Student Assistant or DLL Staff member in the DLL Monday – Friday from 9am – 5pm. DLL equipment cannot be dropped off at the Library Help Desk or in Book Drop-Off.
Fines and Fees
Media checkout items have various overdue fines as listed above. If an item has not been returned within 5 days of its due date, it is considered lost and the patron will be charged an admin fee of $25, replacement fee for the item, and the overdue fines. If the item is returned in working order, the replacement fee will be waived. Administrative fees and overdue fees will NOT be waived. Items with multiple components must all be returned in working order. The patron is responsible for missing items from a kit. Replacement fees for each item are listed below.

Privileges
Any patron that has a fine of $10 or more on their record will have media check-out privileges suspended until the fine is cleared at the business office.
Academic Projects
Materials in the DLL are available free for academic projects such as coursework, research, and presentations. Materials cannot be reserved, and you are encouraged to avoid waste as best as possible. A list of materials is provided below:

Materials for personal use can be purchased through the DLL or you can supply your own. A pricing list of materials is provided below:

Materials must be pre-purchased. Receive a price quote for your project at the DLL and pay at the Financial Office. Bring receipt of payment to the DLL to receive materials for your project.
Approved Materials
All materials supplied by you must be verified for safety and compatibility. If you plan to use your own materials for the 3D Printer, Laser Engraver, and Cricut, we must review that it is safe to use with our equipment. Please talk to a DLL Student Assistant if you would like to purchase your own material and we can provide a list of vendors that have compatible materials.
Selling a Project
All DLL users are encouraged to use the technology to test ideas for a potential business. If you are looking to do large scale production of a project, we ask that you work with a facility to produce that product. The DLL cannot support large-scale production and we want all users to be able to engage with our technology.
Weapons
It is against College policy to possess weapons (concealed or otherwise) on the College campus. This can be defined as any illegal or unauthorized possession of firearms, explosives, other weapons or dangerous chemicals on College premises or use of any such item, even if legally possessed, in a manner that harms, threatens or causes fear to others.
Examples include, but are not limited to; guns, rifles, pistols, bullets, explosives, BB guns, airsoft guns, paint pellet guns, bow and arrows, slingshots, knives, daggers, knuckles, throwing stars, etc. Read the policy here.
Smoking and Drug Paraphernalia
Making and modification of drug paraphernalia and smoking/vaping products is prohibited in the DLL. Read the policy here.
Food and Drink
Food is not allowed in the DLL. Drinks are allowed with closed lids and away from equipment.
Cleaning
Unkempt areas can lead to a safety hazard. Please clean up after yourself. Brooms and cleaning wipes are available for cleaning. 3D prints that need to be discarded should go in the filament recycling box.
Project Storage
Lockers are available for students/faculty/staff to use for long term projects. The DLL is not responsible for the safety of contents of the lockers. Lockers are first-come first-served and cannot be reserved. If you are using a locker, we asked that you mark it using a piece of tape and a marker. When you are done using the locker, please remove your name. Any items or materials that are left after the semester will be the property of the DLL.
